4th-Jan-2010 09:48 pm - An new interview with MST3k's Joel
I recently had a chance to see Joel Hodgson's latest venture, Cinematic Titanic, give a special live performance for New Year's Eve. As part of the promotional blitz, Joel became available for interviews and I was lucky enough to get one with him!

An Interview with MST3k and Cinematic Titanic's Joel Hodgson

In it he discusses fandom cons, weird things he got sent to him while doing the show, how Cinematic Titanic formed, and what recent movie he thought was a "hack job."

Enjoy!

P.S. The Cinematic Titanic show was GREAT and I highly recommend trying to catch one of their performances.
4th-Jan-2010 06:46 am - Good starter MST3K for small kids?
We have two kids ages 6 and 8. They've heard us talking about "Misty" (="MST") and our son (the 6yo) did see the Hot Slot Bots car race between Crow and Tom somehow. For the most part, we haven't run these in front of the kids because they can have adult concepts. It's one thing to explain a joke, it's another thing to explain Joel's drug jokes or any of the more adult entendres.

However, the kids have asked if there's a MST they can watch. They're smart kids, but we understand that MST requires a lot of cultural knowledge, and at this age, wedgie jokes are high humor. That's OK by us, we figure we'll just hit Pause a lot to explain the jokes. But it would be good if we didn't have too much drug/adult humor to have to explain to the under-10 set.

My first thought was some of the fantasy movies like Magic Sword or The Day the Earth Froze. However, maybe some of the shorts would be OK too, and quicker to sit through.

What would be good choices for this situation? Or would it be better to tell them "Sorry, you'll have to wait until you're older"?

The CT live 3 movie marathon was possibly the best event I have ever attended. We made it from 8-1:45 without passing out.

"He should put his head in the horse's bed."
1st-Jan-2010 12:17 am - I love it with life imitates MST3K.
So, a few days ago during a horrible cold snap (understatement--it was a freaking blizzard), my father wanted to make some nice and hearty soup. Good on a cold day. He had the soup ready, but when he went to the cabinet, he made a horrifying discovery. There were no crackers!

He became quite agitated. He kept asking everybody in the house if they were positive that there were no crackers--he even asked my mother if she had remembered to buy him some crackers. She had not--he had not written them on the pad by the fridge. He was most displeased about the lack of crackers.

What makes this awesome? My father's name is Steve. I was laughing so hard.

And even better--I found some crackers. So Steve had crackers.

To anyone who hasn't seen the episode, that is almost directly from "The Incredible Melting Man".

"This would turn K.D. Lang hetero."

"Cafeteria ladies on their off hours."

"Guess if you were a gay guy who liked truckers you'd find these ladies attractive."

"Strut, pout, put it out, it's what you want from grandma."

So, in this new year will kids become gay agents?

Also, it is a long-sleeve T that is a tad big on me, but I couldn't resist :D

Also, I'm not sure if this is allowed over there, so the picture might disappear or something.

Hello, I need help finding an episode. I don't recall the name of the movie that was being riffed, but it was a black and white film that started out with two guys in a spaceship. I recall one of the guys being hit with a laser and floating off into space. The line 'All dogs go to HELL' was used as a riff.

If someone can tell me what episode this was, you have my thanks. I suddenly started wanting to watch it today.
30th-Dec-2009 01:34 am - box of lost riffs...
i love the boys on the Satellite of Love, that goes without saying. its hard for me to find a way in which their genius could be improved upon. but i was wondering...
every been watching along with the guys, and come across a moment of comic gold that they just didn't seem to take advantage of? riffs that shouldacoulda have been but werent?
Hey y'all,

Because I am an anal-retentive Virgo type, I have been doing some tag cleanup, mostly merging cases where some people wrote a tag in the plural and others singular ("host segment" vs. "host segments"), putting in commas to separate tags where people didn't do that and we got one long tag like "mystery science theater mike nelson yout" and "mst3k youtube episodes shorts links", and standardizing how the movie titles are spelled/punctuated.

Here's my question for you: There's a bunch of tags/titles in there beginning with "the" (such as "The Day the Earth Froze") and I wondered what people thought was most natural/useful there. My own inclination is to delete the "the" so the titles will sort by their first "significant digit", as it were; I'd be looking under "D" for "Day" and not "T" for "The" if I were looking for posts related to that episode. But what would you all like?

(Also, ahem, I really gotta question the need for a tag for mst3k in an [info]mst3k community...)
29th-Dec-2009 10:07 am - Just call me Eulabelle
My fiancee decided to trim her toenails in the living room last night. Vacuuming this morning, I caught myself saying, "Toenails! Toenails everywhere. Don't even have this many toes!"
28th-Dec-2009 11:58 am - Favorite Sketch
After thinking about it the other day I was trying to make a list of the most memorable sketches. Ones that I came up with:

- "Toobular Boobular Joy", which still makes me smile.
- Both of Tom's choir pieces
- I can't remember the episode, but I laughed a lot when Tom tried to write a ballad and Crow made fun of him the whole way through until Tom was in tears
- When Crow cooked the space monster they hit (his coy "I mean he's goooooood" never fails to make me smile)
- The beginning of Deadly Bees where Crow drowns in sauce and Mike kisses Gypsy
- "Turn your crank to Frank". I wish they would have finished more than just the snippets of some of those songs because "Mama knocked me down again" and "Turkey Turkey" always get stuck in my head

What other ones and why do you like them?
